John Kerr reached three milestones during his senior season on the Duke men's soccer team in 1986. In addition to winning the Hermann Trophy and the inaugural Missouri Athletic Club Award (both given to the National Player of the Year), Kerr also led Duke to the NCAA title, the Blue Devils' first team title in any sport.

Kerr was the squad's leading scorer with 15 goals and 14 assists, topping the ACC in scoring while claiming the ACC Player of the Year award. A native of Falls Church, Va., Kerr finished his career ranked second on Duke's all-time scoring list with 127 points and second on Duke's all-time assists list with 43.

He began playing for the U.S. National Team in 1984 and remained with the team until 1995. Following graduation in 1986, Kerr became the first American to play in the English Premier League when he signed on with Portsmouth. He returned to the United States later that year to play with the Washington Stars of the ASL.

During his professional career, Kerr would spend time playing in England, Ireland, France and Canada. Kerr also played in the Major Soccer League, the United States’ professional indoor soccer league of the time. He helped lead the San Diego Sockers to the 1992 title. From 1996-97, Kerr played in Major League Soccer as a member of the Dallas Burn and New England Revolution.
